Overview of Eton College

Founded in 1440 by King Henry VI, Eton College stands as one of the most recognised and prestigious independent schools in the world. Situated in the historic town of Windsor, Berkshire, directly across the Thames from Windsor Castle, Eton has educated twenty British Prime Ministers, generations of royalty, and countless leaders across the arts, sciences, and public life.

Eton is a full boarding school for approximately 1,300 boys aged 13 to 18. Every pupil boards at the school, creating an immersive educational environment that sets it apart from most other institutions. The school is structured around a house system, with each boy belonging to one of 25 houses, each overseen by a housemaster who serves as a mentor and pastoral guide.

Admission to Eton is highly competitive. Each year, the school receives significantly more applications than the roughly 260 places available for Year 9 entry. Understanding the full scope of the admissions process — and preparing well in advance — is essential for any family considering an application. For a detailed timeline of when to act, see our guide to Eton College registration dates and deadlines.

Entry Points & Age Requirements

The primary entry point to Eton College is at age 13, when boys join Year 9. This is by far the most common route and the one for which the school's admissions process is primarily designed. Boys must be between their 13th and 14th birthdays on 1 September of the year of entry.

Year 9 Entry (Age 13)

The main admissions route. Boys are registered by the June of Year 6 and sit assessments in Year 6 and Year 8. Approximately 260 places are available.

Sixth Form Entry (Age 16)

A limited number of places are offered for Sixth Form (Year 12). This route is highly competitive and typically suits boys with exceptional GCSE results.

Important: Registration for Year 9 entry should ideally occur by 10 June in the year the boy is in Year 6 (approximately age 10-11). Late registrations may be considered but are not guaranteed a place in the assessment process. Read our full guide on Eton College registration key dates to ensure you don't miss any deadlines.

Registration & Deadlines

The registration process for Eton College is straightforward but time-sensitive. Families must register their son through the school's admissions office, and there is a non-refundable registration fee. Registration can be completed online through the Eton College website. The Assessment Process

The Eton admissions process is multi-staged and designed to assess a boy's academic ability, potential, and character. Understanding each stage is crucial for effective preparation. For a deep dive into the exams themselves, see our Eton entrance exam preparation guide.

Stage 1: The ISEB Common Pre-Test

Boys who are registered for Eton will sit the ISEB Common Pre-test during the autumn term of Year 6. This is a computerised, adaptive assessment that evaluates ability in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English, and mathematics. The test is age-standardised and adapts to the candidate's ability level in real time.

Performance in the pre-test is a significant factor in determining whether a boy receives a conditional offer. While Eton does not publicly disclose exact thresholds, competitive candidates typically perform well above the national average across all four sections. Our entrance exam guide covers specific strategies for each section.

Stage 2: The Eton Assessment (Year 8)

Boys who hold a conditional offer are invited to Eton for the school's own assessment during Year 8. This on-campus assessment takes place over a day and includes written examinations and an interview. The written papers typically focus on reasoning skills, and the school assesses how a boy thinks and approaches problems, rather than testing rote knowledge.

Stage 3: The Interview

The interview is a critical component of the Eton admissions process. It is conducted by a housemaster or a senior member of staff and is designed to assess a boy's intellectual curiosity, personality, maturity, and suitability for the Eton community. Boys are expected to speak confidently about their interests, hobbies, current affairs, and what they have been reading. Read our Eton College interview tips and common questions for a comprehensive breakdown of what to expect.

Insider insight: The Eton interview is not just about academic achievement. Interviewers are looking for boys who show genuine enthusiasm, the ability to think independently, and a willingness to engage with new ideas. Our consultants, including former Eton housemasters, can provide detailed guidance on what to expect.

Interview Preparation

The interview is often the part of the admissions process that families find most daunting. At Elite British Admissions, we believe that thorough preparation can make the difference between a good interview and an outstanding one. We cover this topic in detail in our dedicated guide to Eton College interview tips and common questions.

1

Practice Articulating Interests

Boys should be able to speak fluently and enthusiastically about what they enjoy, whether that is sport, music, science, or a particular period of history. Surface-level answers are not sufficient.

2

Engage With Current Affairs

Reading broadsheet newspapers and quality publications helps boys form opinions on topical issues. Interviewers often ask about recent events to gauge awareness and critical thinking.

3

Read Widely and Deeply

A well-read candidate stands out. Boys should be able to discuss books they have enjoyed, explain why a particular author resonated with them, and articulate ideas clearly.

4

Mock Interview Practice

Simulated interviews with experienced consultants help boys build confidence, refine their answers, and learn to manage nerves in a formal setting.

Academic Expectations

Eton College maintains exceptionally high academic standards. Boys are expected to arrive with a strong foundation in core subjects and a demonstrable appetite for learning. The school offers a broad curriculum that includes the sciences, humanities, languages, mathematics, and the arts.

At GCSE level, boys typically take ten or more subjects. Eton has consistently achieved outstanding results, with the vast majority of boys securing top grades. At A-Level, the school offers a wide choice of subjects and its results place it among the highest-achieving schools in the country. Many leavers go on to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, as well as leading institutions in the United States and across the world.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Having guided hundreds of families through the Eton admissions process, we have identified several recurring mistakes that can undermine an otherwise strong application.

1

Leaving registration too late

The registration deadline is firm. Families who miss it may find their son cannot be considered for their preferred year of entry.

2

Underestimating the ISEB Pre-test

The pre-test is adaptive and challenging. Without proper preparation, even bright boys may not perform to their full potential.

3

Neglecting interview preparation

Some families focus exclusively on academics and overlook the interview. At Eton, personality, curiosity, and character are assessed alongside intellectual ability.

4

Over-coaching and inauthenticity

Interviewers at Eton are skilled at identifying rehearsed responses. Boys should be well-prepared but also genuine, natural, and confident in expressing their own views.

5

Ignoring extracurricular breadth

Eton values well-rounded individuals. A boy with only academic achievements may be less compelling than one who also demonstrates passion in sport, music, drama, or community service.
